The PGA Tour returns to Maui to kick off the 2025 Season

Historical Significance

Established in 1953, the Tournament of Champions has a storied legacy of showcasing the PGA TOUR’s elite. Since relocating to Maui in 1999, it has become synonymous with the island’s picturesque landscapes and has played a pivotal role in promoting golf tourism in Hawaii. Notably, the event has generated over $9 million for local community charities, underscoring its commitment to the Maui community.

Impact of the Maui Wildfires

In August 2024, devastating wildfires swept through parts of Maui, causing significant loss and hardship. The Kapalua Resort, including the Plantation Course, remained unscathed, allowing the tournament to proceed as scheduled. The PGA TOUR and title sponsor Sentry have demonstrated unwavering support for the local community, with Sentry contributing over $1 million to relief efforts.

The tournament’s return is seen as a beacon of hope and resilience, providing economic stimulation and a morale boost to the island’s residents.

Field and Notable Absences

The 2025 field boasts a record number of participants, including 31 PGA TOUR winners from the previous season and 29 players who qualified via the FedExCup standings.

However, World No. 1 and reigning FedExCup champion Scottie Scheffler will be absent due to a recent surgery on his right hand suffered on Christmas Day.

Viktor Hovland will also be out an undetermined amount of time with a foot injury.

Betting Favorites

With Scheffler’s withdrawal, the betting landscape has shifted. Early odds had placed him as the favorite, ranging from +260 to +350. In his absence, players like Xander Schauffele, Viktor Hovland, and Max Homa are expected to be among the top contenders, with odds likely adjusting to reflect the new field dynamics.
